The KELY Phone Recycling Campaign
11-01-2010
Students UNITE for A Greener Planet
Did you know that Hong Kongers have the most number of mobile phones per person in the world? Equally alarming is the frequency in which they are acquired, with young people replacing a mobile phone in less than one year and eight months (Hong Kong Friends of the Earth). With new models coming out every second this translates into thousand of tons of hazardous waste (over 65,000 tons for Americans alone, ezinearticles 2009); resulting in dangerous toxins such as arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury that are leaching into our environment. In response, KELY together with Make a Difference Hong Kong has been collecting unused mobile phones, making them available to third world countries, and using some of the proceeds to fund our youth programmes. KELY is proud to welcome ARBOR (a group of dedicated student environmentalists of Li Po Chung United World College), who will officially launch the campaign at a forum on the 24th of January, 2010. Corporations who have already signed up for the campaign include: Coca-Cola, Goldman Sachs, Shatin College, the Carmel School and others.
