Get Positive!

Did you know that stress is a leading cause of mental health problems? In Hong Kong, young people experience stress from lots of different places, ranging from academic pressure, family expectations, bullying, friendship or relationship issues, sexual health issues, racial or sexual discrimination. According to Central Registry of Drug Abuse (2015 first quarter), stress is one of the main reasons why young people (under 21 year olds) may use drugs for the first time.

Get Positive! is a performance arts-based programme that uses circus skills such as juggling and diabolo training to help students from local secondary schools deal with stress . KELY was the first NGO in Hong Kong to receive certified Social Circus Training from Cirque du Monde. Since 2007, we have reached 163,800 students with this programme and helped them develop skills, increase self-confidence and learn how to cope with stress. Through circus skills training and workshops on stress management, this programme helps young people learn strategies to deal with stress and pressure. We target local secondary schools with one off stress management workshops and longer term circus skills programmes. This programme offers them new skills while developing resilience and self-confidence. A positive network of new friends on the programme offers the opportunity to develop peer support and the performing aspect of the programme encourages initiatives within participants’ own communities.
