Drama & Life Skills programmes

KELY’s Drama & Life Skills programmes are designed for young people to develop skills and confidence in using resistance strategies, enabling them to effectively resist peer influence around substance misuse. Drama offers a fun and interactive way to engage young people, enabling the development of life skills around self-confidence, communication skills, emotional management and self-expression. The programme aims to increase knowledge around substance misuse, using activities for discussing and challenging perceived peer norms. Participants develop greater understanding of the risks and protective factors against substance misuse.

Professional actors support the programme, sharing knowledge and technical skills. Participants use these skills to devise short performances addressing key issues around substance misuse and its risk factors that are relevant to their peers. These performances will be shared in school, as well as with the wider community, ultimately raising awareness about substance misuse issues amongst their peers and community.

From 2016-2018, KELY is running a drama-based programme with vulnerable young people form non-Chinese speaking backgrounds, with funding from the Beat Drugs Fund. Additionally, in 2016-17, with funding from the American Women’s Association, KELY is working with a group of girls from low-income ethnic minority backgrounds.
